Photographs taken 5 June 2013
I took these pictures to document the condition of the cemetery when I made one of several
visits to apply herbicide in an attempt to control the growth of brush and weeds. It was the result of these visits
that spurred me to begin the restoration effort.
The
cemetery was in a sad condition after years of benign neglect interspersed with brief periods of attempts to control the vegetation.
The two obelisks had fallen down over 100 years ago by best estimates.
The box tombs and table-top tombs have been down as long as the obelisks.
About 1963, fifty years ago, teenagers broke almost all of the tombstone tops off and broke several into pieces.
The following pictures show what existed in the summer of 2013.
Please be patient as the load time for these photos is long. There are many
photos and I elected to post high resolution photos which can be viewed in full size by clicking on any of the individual
photos.
Photographs Taken 11 September 2013 At The Start of Phase I Restoration
In early July Dan Allen had spent a day partially clearing the brush from
the cemetery in preparation for his restoration work. I took these photos in September the day the restoration
work officially began after Dan had done further clearing.
Photographs taken 13 January 2012
The photos below show the cemetery free of weeds and brush in early 2012. However, weeds
and brush grew quickly and by June of 2013 they were out of control.
This shows how quickly the condition of the cemetery can deteriorate in the absence of routine
maintenance.
